Estimating Brand Logo Colors for Dark Mode

Colorlab introduces Byeongjin Kim’s (김병진) and Giyun Lee’s (이기윤) latest publication, “Color Adjustment of Brand Logos for Dark Mode Display,” in PLOS One. This study investigates how to adapt brand logos, typically designed for light backgrounds, for effective use in dark mode environments. Through two experiments, the research identifies systematic patterns in color modification, including adjustments in lightness, chroma, and hue for a variety of logo colors. Based on these findings, a predictive model was developed to ensure that logos maintain brand identity while enhancing visibility and visual comfort in dark mode. A subsequent preference survey revealed that participants generally preferred the adjusted logos, particularly those originally using darker colors. The proposed model offers a practical, data-driven approach for designers to preserve color consistency and brand recognition across diverse digital interfaces, providing valuable insights for early-stage design adjustments in dark mode.
