Colorlab introduces Byeongjin Kim’s (김병진) latest publication, “Immersive Evaluation of In-Product Lighting Design Using Virtual Reality,” in Virtual Reality. The study examines how virtual reality can serve as a practical evaluation tool for lighting design in home appliances.
Building on lighting concepts developed through a designer workshop, the research implements a set of representative scenarios within realistic virtual kitchen environments. Designers explored these scenarios in VR, allowing them to assess lighting effects from natural viewing angles and within contextually rich surroundings. Their responses showed that VR supports intuitive understanding of lighting behavior, facilitates rapid exploration of different ambient conditions, and offers meaningful advantages for early-stage design review.
